This Thursday Night Football match will be a battle between the top 2 seeds of the AFC conference. It is also the rivalry game with the highest win count between 2 teams this season (21 wins between the two).
The Chiefs have been getting all the publicity because of the MVP caliber performance of their new starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes ( who also has a chance to be 1 of few QB’s to throw for 50+ touchdowns), but Kansas City will not have an easy game against the Chargers who have been under the radar, but playing very impressive this season and are only 1 game under the Chiefs.
The mindset of the media is that the Chiefs will have an easy time with the LA Chargers, but Chargers are within the top 7 for scoring points on offense and preventing their opponents from scoring on defense, so if the Chiefs listen to the media talk and sleep on the Chargers, Philip Rivers (Chargers quarterback) team could leave the Kansas City stadium with a blowout win!!!
One area I feel the Chiefs will suffer, is on the running back position (after the release of Kareem Hunt), they lack a dominant, durable running back who can move the team’s offense down the field, and what makes things worst is that the Chargers have a high performing back in Melvin Gordon, and if cleared to play, he will be an effective piece of the Chargers offense.
The biggest safety net for the Chiefs’ offense and reason for Patrick Mahomes having a chance at aquiring a 50+ touchdowns season is speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill (Tyreek is really fast!!!). If there is any receiver in the NFL that can make it a challenge for the Chargers defense to keep their opponent under 21 point ( Chargers defense gives up less than 21 points to their opponents on average), it will be Tyreek Hill’s ability to separate from his man-to-man defender, causing multiple players to focus on him in the long run, which will put less pressure on the remaining receivers.
After the many years the Chargers came up short of the playoffs, they have a chance of taking the #1 seed and having home field advantage throught the playoffs, so I think the Chargers will come out blazing on both ends, Rivers should not have any trouble facing off against the Chiefs’ defense, as they are one of the worst statistically, but they have been able to turn the ball over, so if Rivers is able to protect the ball from the Kansas City defense, his team will have a better chance of winning the game.
Though the Chiefs will be playing this game on their home field, I think the Chargers will pull off the upset because the of the importance of playoff positioning and the strength of their defense, winning with a score of 35 – 27.
